Our story

Back in 2017, it was a happy coincidence when Sharmeen found Martina and her husband Andreas’s beautiful home on Air BnB in Germany. Staying with them for three months while interning in a Roman ship museum, they shared their creative backgrounds in art and design. This was only a starting point for Martina and Sharmeen’ s friendship. Over delicious Indian, German and experimental meals they exchanged stories of their lives and countries. A creative instinct to culminate the visions they shared almost instantly started to manifest. Visualizing a unique design language, shaped by creative dialogue and the hope to inspire people to experience more joy in their daily lives, gave birth to what you know as MAREEN.

SHARMEEN ATTARWALA
Sharmeen is an interior and product designer based in India and Germany. She specialized in her field at the University of Bergen, Norway. Her practice involves a variety of experimental and playful processes to seek design solutions. She has a special love and talent for manifesting abstract concepts into experiential multisensory design that reflect in her work for museums, exhibitions, and private residences. She believes that we are surrounded by hidden inspiration which with a pinch of optimism and empathy can not only be found but transformed into something meaningful.
MARTINA VOIGT SCHMID
Martina is a visual artist and painter, based near Frankfurt, Germany. She loves the vibrant energies of colors and playing with them in the compositions of her intuitive paintings and designs. Things from nature like leaves, fruits, seeds, and flowers as well as abstract shapes like stripes, circles, and dots keep showing up in her work, partly veiling each other, leaving room for each person to see different things. Over the last 25 years, her art has been shown in many international exhibitions.

MAREEN is an intercultural art-design collaboration between Sharmeen Attarwala and Martina Voigt- Schmid, dedicated to handmade carpets that create a joyful living experience. In our design language, we explore elements that touch the roots of what unites people from different cultures.

We at Mareen interweave art and design techniques to create one-of-a-kind handmade carpets. Adapting a collaborative process that works closely with artisans in India, the carpets are made using high-quality materials and skilled weaving techniques. We hope to bring positive vibrations into your spaces with the pop of colors and dreamy imagination.
